COLUMBUS REGIONAL CHILDREN'S CENTER
This renovated pediatrics unit was designed to be more friendly to its patients, staff, and the visiting families. The unit hosts 28 private rooms and 2 semi-private rooms. Included in these 30 rooms, three are designed for the special needs of oncology patients and two observation rooms are located near the nurses station. A centrally located pantry with refrigerator, microwave, and sink allow parents to store food nearby. Also incorporated into the project: an enlarged, glass play area, special family lounge, staff offices and conference room, and clean and soiled supply rooms. Serving a range of age groups in the patient population, this unit was designed to appeal to the sense of playfulness in all youths, while not relying on trite imagery and cliches, which are common in such spaces. A vocabulary of dynamic shapes and patterns was employed, which engage the patient's imagination and encourage healing. Budget dollars were judiciously balanced with emphasis on delivering value (worth which exceeds cost), function, and longevity. |
